Simple Living | Rest, Written In Time

The sweet solitude of a fresh snow has fallen on us. I walk through the powder, an excited puppy leaping about my ankles, and I’m held by the quiet, by the calm, by the pause. It sinks into my soul, causes me to deeply inhale, deeply exhale. And it and says, Hello. I’ve missed you.

I’ve missed you, too.

That familiar friend that is twittering chickadees, etched frost, exquisite crystals, a serene palette, sharpened resolution. The friend that says, kindle the fire, brew a hot drink, tuck in, and rest. Here in the ebb, take time.

Of course, life does go on, even though the first snow has fallen, but this season of dormancy thoughtfully reminds me of the importance of falling in step with nature’s rest, seeing what it might look like for me, for us, in these late fall and winter months. Our life is full and round and challenging to manage (yours, too?). It’s always changing, always requiring. And so the need for rest.

I thought about this as I filled in a new journal this week, opening its fresh pages to pencil in months and days, to write down the guidelines that help me navigate time. I wrote rest into it. Into days, into weeks, into months. As a reminder, because I’ll likely forget. Pause here, to go again. It’s curious that I’d need to be told by my own hand on paper, but I’m rewriting a belief that has said work before play. But whatever happens when the work doesn’t end?

There it is. Rest, written in time, already decided and given space.

Loves? Are you wondering about the progress and timeline of my new live series, Living Well? I’ll be honest, I have been, too. This is an idea that I’m so taken with, and I’m so looking forward to sharing with you. As I’ve read through your room submissions and looked at your photos, as I’ve listed your questions for the Q & A, as I’ve prepared our home to share with you, it’s all felt so good. There’s much anticipation here, I must say.

The process of preparation, filming, editing, of learning a whole new way of capturing and sharing has been interesting and is taking time. (Thankfully, our eldest son, Jered, who is a film major, is and will be helping me by doing the video editing, but that also means working with his schedule, too.) I had to smile the other day when I thought how this process must be similar to writing a book - you announce it, and then everyone has to wait with exquisite patience for its release. (Maybe I’m giving you a taste of that?) As the creator, you badly want to make it happen sooner, but all you can really do is keep preparing, keep doing the work behind the scenes, keep on.

I’m keeping on. Your patience is exquisite.

What I can do right now, is tell you more about the series. I’ll say, first off, that Living Well is not a course, and it’s not a show. It’s invitation. Inspiration. Beauty. I like to think of it as a gathering, an opportunity for you to see, with me, our home and way of simplicity. It’s also a sharing of my design knowledge, in specific context with your room submissions, your Q & A questions, and my current design projects, so you can be informed and inspired to live well in yours. Living Well is individual sessions, available live via Zoom, priced at $40.00 each, and will be offered every 4-8 weeks.

P.S. Keep sending me your room and Q & A submissions! (Here’s how) What would you want to know or ask if you had an hour with me in your home? Here’s your opportunity! If you have any questions, ask away!
