Forage

I knew they’d be coming soon. They’re always first to bloom, the first to crack from winter’s shell. Before green grass has spread in force, before a single leaf has opened anywhere, there are hawthorne blooms. Lacy white flowers on spiny, rough-barked branches (such opposites together), their scent valiantly declaring spring in a quiet, determined way.

Sure enough, on my run a couple mornings ago, there they were, swollen buds lining the branches of hawthorne growing wild at the edges of ditches and fields. A mental note and a couple days later, in the drip of a soaking spring rain, I snipped some to bring inside.

Such a balm since my last gathering of wild things in December. The bliss and anticipation of a new foraging season beginning once again.
