Wool, silk, cashmere, lingerie, active wear - it seems that the most warm and the most delicate of clothing fall into the same category when it comes to laundering: mild soap, gentle cycle, cold water, air dry.
The washing of these things here in the little house is as simple as any other load that gets tossed into the machine - pour in detergent, poke the right buttons, and you're good to go. It's the drying of the fussier garments that's been more difficult to manage. Specifically, where to hang them. With only one shower curtain rod worth of draping space in the house, it made for measured washing so I didn't have more wet garments than space on which to dry them. Not the best of situations. I admit, it was easy to look longingly at foldable drying racks and their many dowels at the ready, except for the small but big problem of not having a place to store the folded rack after the garments were dry.
Oh, but the persistant idea of dowels! It hovered just out of reach in the back of my mind until one day, there it was, the perfect solution: cut dowels to fit the space we have. Spaced evenly along the top rim of the shower, they offer triple the drying space than we had before, plenty for our needs.
Their coat of white paint visually blends them into the wall when they're tucked away under the bathroom window after the garments are dry. And just like that, there's plenty of space here in the little house for drying the gentle-care garments.
